The use of hides and skins, as by-product of the human nourishment, is one of the most ancestral manufacturing activities, and nowadays it recovers a special validity in agreement with the environmental sensitivity of our society: the optimum exploitation and re-use of natural resources with the minimum impact in the environment. As is a come back to the origins, the mankind compels itself to revise in deep the production processes and their implications. This happens, however, in a globalized economical scene that requires from the companies the highest competitiveness level in order to survive.
In this context, the availability of research and service centres as AIICA is essential for the support to the actions of innovation and improvement of the leather sector to increase its levels of quality, productivity and overcome the ecological problems that the environmental laws make gradually more relevant.
